Thriplow Daffodil Weekend started in 1969 when the church needed major roof repairs. Residents decided to raise funds by opening their gardens and making cups of tea for their visitors. They made an amazing £206 and were so delighted they decided to do it all again the following year – and so the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend was born.
Raising funds for charity
Thriplow have now raised money for charity to a total of over £450,000 over 49 years. The tireless work of the village was recognised in 2011 when the Committee received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent of an MBE for charities). The nominated charity for 2019 is: Rosie Maternity Unit, Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) who are raising funds for essential equipment needed by the Acute Neonatal Transport Service and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, to help support new born and vulnerable babies across the east of England.
Each year, the village has planted more daffodils, of both early and late varieties, to try and ensure we are prepared for most things the weather can throw. There are around 100 different varieties on show.
